I’ve wanted to do this show since I looked in my wife’s psychology textbook under depression for information and it had a picture of Drew Carey and just said ‘Comedians are depressed.’ So now I’m consulting comedians. Only the best. These are the cream of the crop. It will be neurologically impossible to be depressed during this show. We may even cure a few therapists before the night is done. I hear they need help.

Who knows more about depression than comedians? Maria Bamford (Comedians of Comedy, Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno, Variety’s Top Ten Comics), Will Franken (Good Luck With It, Best SF Comedian), Cynthia Levin (Comedy Central’s “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn) and surprise therapy guests join comic and host Heather Gold and you. Is it possible to be a comic without first being depressed? Are there Americans who aren’t depressed? These and other fine answers await your participation at Comedians on Depression. Will not cause drowsiness, bloating or leakage. Cheaper than therapy.

Tasting words

Only 5 documented cases of this form of synesthesia (the neurological coupling of senses) in the past century according to this piece documents a study on a woman who has it.

We did one of my favourite Heather Gold Shows on perception (listen) which featured many synesthetes. It’s really one of my favourite subjects, possibly because I associate physical sensation with much of what I do creatively. Or maybe it’s just because it seems the closest human being come to supernatural powers.

Oprah follows tHGS

Oprah just announced at the end of her 10 weeks with Eckhart Tolle that she’ll be continuing the Monday night webcasts as her Soul Series. This is the name of her weekly XM Radio broadcasts covering the spiritual stuff she’s most passionate about, but that she doesn’t feel the TV audience is ready for. I’ve heard her say so on the Radio show.

This is powerful stuff for the web and connecting people through talk shows online which is at the heart of the Heather Gold Show (tHGS) mission. She even used the Ghandi quote about “being the change you wish to see in the world” which I used for the first few shows.

If you want people to connect, the web is really much more the right medium than pure television.

"Are women less willing to speak their minds?"

My friend Cheryl Dahle (a woman with a great mind to speak) has alerted me that this is a question Salon and Lindsay Campbell and the newsvlog Moblogic have asked.

I think its the wrong question to ask if your goal is to have more women’s opinions spoken in public. A more helpful question is: what helps women talk on camera?

Gossip @SXSW08 (audio podcast, 60 min.)

Join me and chief Valleywag Owen Thomas, TMZ.com General Manager Alan Citron, NY Times reporter Shaila Dewan, twitter founder Ev Williams and surprise guest and Star on-air personality Julia Allison as we discuss Gossip at SXSW08.

This carousing panel featured so many great moments- Julia sitting on my lap, Shaila bursting Julia’s bubble about fact checking and “respectable” main stream media, and the genuine community response to the Mark Zuckerberg / Sarah Lacy keynote disaster….it’s worth watching the video as well.

My infamous Gossip panel @ SXSW08 (video 60 min.)

During my SXSW panel, “Gossip,” tech scene gossip-ee Julia Allison booed Chief Valleywag and gossiper Owen Thomas, then ended up joining our panel, sitting on my lap and became part of a carousing, unpredictable conversation that was twittered, liveblogged on Valleywag twice while it went on. Lane Becker called it “The best panel I’ve ever been to at SXSW.”

As the conversation went on the room filled up to capacity. It was the first time people packed a location because people tweeted out that they should come check it out.

Monsanto did not drink farmer Percy Schmeiser's milkshake (32 min)

Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser stood his ground when Monsanto sued him for patent infringement almost 10 years ago. Just last week he won a landmark case in small claims court, forcing Monsanto to admit liability for the contamination of his crops. I spoke with Percy today and his story really enlightened me as to some of the risks of Genetically Modified Organisms which I’d not contemplated.

It’s not the just about “frankenfood.” It’s about what is done in order to create and own life in the service of near-term profits. When you hear Percy’s story, you’ll see how it’s not much different than the techniques Daniel Plainview used in There Will Be Blood. Monsanto’s legal right to patent a seed also means, based on Percy’s suit, that it is responsible for the consequences. Denise Caruso, started the Hybrid Vigor Institute for scientists because she found out that leading genetics researchers have no idea what the risks are based on what they’re creating.

Denise asks How we can focus on Process Over Outcome? for the live May tHG show.
