I clean up ok: trying on the wedding dresses

I tried on about 50 dresses on Thursday. This was the best of the lot. You can’t see it , but in the back is a bustle with many little fake diamonds all the way down from the waist through the train.

Despite being 70% off, I wasn’t sure it was “the one.” That’s what all the women there call it. The guidance they provide in finding it is that you’ll “just know.” I guess it’s like dating. Oh us women, knowing what we want is so hard.Or perhaps I should be specific. Knowing what I want can be confounding. A lifetime of pleasing in my head got me there.Practical reality helps. It took sitting in one of these dressing rooms a few weeks ago and getting a pep talk from Sonya the older woman in the place to realize i even wanted to try on a wedding dress. This is only the 5th dress I’ve ever shopped for.I vlogged to ease my shopping anxiety. More to come.

Shopping for a wedding dress

I can count the number of times I’ve shopped for a dress on one hand. I’m about to go uptown in Manhattan to Saks’ Superbowl of wedding dress sales. Alone. I am nervous, but this should be entertaining. I only realized I wanted to feel beautiful at my wedding last week. I’ve never felt beautiful before.

Dear Governor Schwarzennegger

I wrote you last year to ask you to sign the genter-neutral marriage bill. I am writing again to ask the same thing. I hope I do not have to keep writing you.

I am a gay Californian and registered independent. I am marrying my fiancee in San Francisco next June. Unfortunately we have to have a second wedding in Canada so that we can be legally married. My fiancee and I (and the many other same-sex couples in California) deserve equality and the many legal rights that come with legal marriage, or unions or whatver it is you or the people in your focus groups feel comfortable calling it.

Given that this legislation keeps passing the California legislature, it is obviously the will of the people of California. The only thing I ca see you gaining from vetoing it is help within certain parts of the Republican party in the rest of the country.

Please have some courage and do the right thing. Gay marriage in California is inevitable. Signing this bill now would make history and be an act of true leadership. You were elected by promising not to just be another politician. Please prove it. Take a stand for equality and sign this bill.

Respectfully,

Heather Gold
San Francisco, CA

Yes, this is really the letter I sent.
Please write him too. The bill is Gender Neutral marriage AB000043.

How did you prepare for your wedding?

Marriage lesson #001

It can be much easier to co-ordinate with someone at the other end of the country, than in the other room.

My Gay Wedding: the planning begins

What do you do when you can’t get legally married where you live?

Go to Canada.

Oh it’s just like the draft, except for the love part and the no killing part. And the h’ors d’oeuvres.

It’s not exactly that flip. I grew up in Canada. my whole family lives in Toronto.

We’ve decided to have the wedding-wedding here in San Francisco where our community a year from June. We originally though it might happen earlier. But between multiple surgeries and unrelated medical school it didn’t.

But we want to be legally married as well. So we’re gong to do that in Toronto. Christmasi-sh-time, because that’s how school holidays are organized. With some family and people to celebrate because my family are Jews and they’re gonna shep naches whenever they can. You want to know why weddings are a big deal to Jews? Because it’s a legitimate occasion for happiness. Those don’t come often, so Jews have to cram all the happiness and tummelling they can whenever they get the chance.

And I’m their oldest child and my mum has watched her friends have weddings so finally, she gets a chance. Let me tell you. If they wait long enough, it won’t matter that it’s a lesbian wedding. It’s a frickin’ wedding. Ladyporn.

And now that Stace is going to med school (in Long Island no less) she’s as good as Jewish. She gets 58 bonus mitzvah points. I thought she was going to be a dance therapist when I met her. The last thing I wanted to do was. like my mother, marry a doctor. (That’s a much longer story, or play, to come later.)

I’m thrilled that they’re thrilled. It was a 10 year journey with my mum to go from glum faces and anxiety attacks to “I want to make a wedding for you.” She came around before it became legal in Canada, but it sure helps.

Stace’s folks haven’t had as long as mine to deal with this and they still live in a small town in the midwest. They’re not planning on inviting extended family or friends to either wedding.

I imagine it’s weirder in some ways to be a parent of someone gay than to be gay yourself. I mean when I came out, I got to sleep with cute girls. What did my parents get out of it?

So now it’s gonna get to the details. This is he part that can make weddings not fun. We will plan our wedding-wedding in San Francisco fully ourselves. Celebrating after City Hall we can leave to the grown ups. My parents want Stace’s folks to feel comfortable too. Who will come? How will the fun happen? Stay tuned…

My sister Wendy threw Stacey and I this amazing engagement party last night. It was truly one of the most memorable. loving evenings of my life. Wendy was so giving, she even let me borrow her shoes, made by some Brazillian designer in NY right before the party. I’d never worn heels like this before and I really did feel sexy in them, not something I’ve felt based on dress very often.

These shoes reminded me of riding my motorcycle a bit. It took all my concentration to walk in them.

The machatunim are about to meet

Machatunim is a yiddish word that describes the relationship between in-laws (the parents of both people in a couple)

We’re about to go pick up Stacey’s folks at the airport. My parents are already here.  My sister was super sweet and organized a little engagement party for us.

Announcing my Video Blog for dabble

I just signed on to be the spokesperson and featured video blogger for Dabble, a new web start-up that’s part of the live web. (That’s Mary Hodder’s great and more accurate term for Web 2.0). Dabble was just mentioned in a featured piece in Newsweek on the new trend in social media online and I’m the featured intro on their home page. I’ll be highlighting great remixed pieces on dabble and posting weekly video blog segments with comedy, commentary and conversation with real people as opposed to traditional TV soundbites. All in my quest for truth and connection. I’ll be posting everything here as well.
